You Should Have Organised Apology Tour, Not Thank You Tour – Andy Appiah Kubi Jabs Bawumia

The former Member of Parliament for the Asante Akim North constituency in the Ashanti Region, Andy Appiah Kubi, has rebuked New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders for organising a thank-you tour after losing the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on UTV Ghana, the former legislator said the party should have organised an ‘apology tour’ instead, before even thinking of a ‘thank you’ tour.

Appiah Kubi said it was distasteful that after Ghanaians kicked out the NPP for poor governance, they have refused to apologise for it and instead jumped straight into a ‘thank you’ tour.

He opined that once the party was punished in the 2024 elections, they needed to apologise because forgiveness is needed before one can proceed to gratitude.

Appiah Kubi faulted the party’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, for organising the tour ‘in a rush’

“In the first place, the thank you tour, I said from the beginning that it was unnecessary,” Appiah Kubi said, speaking in Twi. “The arrangements were made in haste to ensure certain people organised the tour first. What were we thanking people for? If someone said what you did was wrong so I’m punishing you, is your reply supposed to be thank you”?

Appiah Kubi said the NPP’s first bet should have been an apology to Ghanaians for taking them through years of hardship. He said Ghanaians made it clear that the NPP was below par as a government, so the party should have been responsive to that and issued an apology.

He said once Ghanaians forgave the NPP, they could proceed on their thank-you tour.

The former Asante-Akim North MP was one of dozens of NPP legislators who were kicked out by Ghanaians in the 2024 race, handing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) a parliamentary super majority. Asked if he has organised an apology tour in his own constituency, he said the process is ongoing.

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia commenced a thank you tour to travel nationwide to thank Ghanaians for their support of the NPP over the previous election cycle. The Vice President’s team invited former flagbearer contender Kennedy Agyapong onboard to ensure a united party, arguing that was the only way they could win in 2028. Their collaboration was short-lived as Agyapong clashed with Bono Regional party chair Kwame Baffoe ‘Abronye’, during the tour, with the two exchanging lively insults. Agyapong later announced his withdrawal from the tour and simultaneously launched his bid for the party’s flagbearer contest towards the 2028 elections.
