The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has exposed a slew of top Ghanaian officials in political, religious, legal and media positions involved in illegal mining, locally known as ‘galamsey’.
Speaking on Starr Chat on Thursday, April 10, Gbande said the NDC government is prepared to deal with the scourge of illegal mining but has to tread carefully because those involved are some of the richest, most powerful and influential people in the country.
Gbande said involvement in galamsey cuts across party lines because top officials in both major parties are involved in the menace and are joined by other prominent lawyers, journalists, and pastors, all destroying the country for their own selfish gains.
“We are going to ruthlessly deal with galamsey. Galasemy has various actors in it. NDC people are involved, NPP people are involved, pastors are involved, lawyers are involved, journalists are involved,” the deputy NDC top scribe said in the interview conducted by EIB Network boss, Bola Ray.
He continued, “It is a multifaceted industry… People have used galamsey money to go to law school and to win parliamentary seats.”
Under questioning of if he had evidence to back his claims, Gbande said his claims are common knowledge to all those involved in galamsey.
“If you know the industry, you know what it is. You need a calculated government wielding strategy detached from political influence to be able to deal with it irrespective of who is involved,” he said.
Illegal mining has become a hot topic issue in recent years after its explosion under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government. Major river bodies across the mining belt of Ghana encapsulating Ashanti, Eastern, Western, and other regions were all heavily polluted due to the activities of illegal miners, sparking heavy protests in late 2024.
Gbande noted that the increased granting of mining leases under the previous government heavily exacerbated the problem, promising the NDC government would implement a long-term solution to the raging menace.
