There’s Nothing Wrong If Mahama Seeks A Third Term – A Plus

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central in the Central Region of Ghana, Honourable Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, said there is nothing inherently wrong if President John Dramani Mahama decides to go for a third term in office.

Speaking in an interview with UTV Ghana on the Adekye Nsoroma programme, A Plus said changing the constitution to allow a President to seek a third term is a matter of law; therefore, if that law is followed, nothing wrong has been done.

A Plus said there is no indication that the President is planning to do that; however, he is making these comments to stop those in the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) loudly lamenting that the President is only removing the Chief Justice to pave the way for him to seek a third term.

“I’ve heard people saying Mahama is planning to sack the Chief Justice to pave the way to run for a third term. Changing the constitution is a matter of law,” A Plus told host Abena Kyei Boakye. “John Mahama can seek a billion terms in office; it is a matter of law.”

A Plus added that the constitution was not written in stone but is a dynamic document that provides for its own amendment; therefore, if all processes are followed, it can be changed to allow President Mahama to seek a third term.

“The constitution belongs to you, it belongs to me, it belongs to us all. The constitution provides measures to amend it,” the Gomoa Central MP continued. “Justice Sowah in Tuffour vs Attorney General said the constitution is not just a document filled with text but a living organism capable of growth. So if the President thinks that the term limits are not good for Ghana, he can bring the constitution to Parliament for us to consider amending it.”

A Plus conceded that currently, the President has not given any indication that he wants to run for a third term, but he is making his comments to shut up those in the NPP complaining about a third term being unconstitutional. A Plus said in a democracy, Parliament has the power to make laws, and they can even pass a law abolishing elections in Ghana.

He concluded by listing all the tricks NPP used to pass numerous laws during their time in power to push through unpopular policies such as the e-levy. A Plus rebuked the NPP for thinking they are the only party that can use the law to have their way, but whenever the NDC tries the same, they cry bloody murder.
