The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been invited by the Ghana Police Service for questioning after a video surfaced appearing to show him striking an officer.

Markin got into a heated altercation with an officer during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration organised by the opposition New Patriotic Party in Accra on Monday, May 5.

In a viral video clip circulating on social media, the controversial Effutu MP is seen exchanging words with police officers from behind a barricade and then is seen making a swift motion with his hand to attempt to hit an officer.

The Ghana Police Service, following the incident, released a statement announcing they had written to the Office of the Speaker requesting that the MP be released to assist in investigations.

“The Ghana Police Service has reviewed several video footages on an alleged assault on a Police officer by Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin during the just ended demonstration. Following the review, the Service has written to the Right Hon. Speaker of Parliament requesting the release of Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin to assist ongoing investigations into the alleged incident,” the statement read, in part.

The Service added that the officer involved would also assist in investigations.

Markin responds

The Effutu MP and Minority leader responded to the claims of assaulting an officer by claiming he was assaulted during the demonstration.

In a letter released via his office, Hon. Afenyo-Markin claimed an officer, whom he identified as one Constable Forson, assaulted him by hitting him on his chest near his heart.

Markin said the video circulating purporting to show him assaulting an officer was merely his reaction to being attacked.

He announced his intention to formally petition the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to launch a formal investigation into the matter.

Afenyo-Markin added that he was the victim of assault, bemoaning the NDC’s attempt to turn him into the aggressor via the NDC propaganda machinery.
