NPP Will Easily Win in 2028 Because NDC Will Bring A First-Time Candidate – Dr Bawumia Assures Supporters

Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has declared the 2028 elections a ‘cool chop’ for the NPP due to the dynamics of Ghanaian electoral politics.

Speaking to party supporters, Dr Bawumia said the mere fact that the ruling President, John Dramani Mahama, is term-limited, forcing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to field a first-time candidate, is a big advantage for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the coming elections.

Bawumia said Ghanaian political history points to the fact that first-time candidates generally lose before Ghanaians trust them enough to elect them at their second or third try, giving him a clear path to victory in the December 2028 polls.

“I believe that in 2028, the NPP will come back into government. If you look at our political history, it suggests that it is usually very difficult for a first-time Presidential candidate to win an election in Ghana,” Dr Bawumia said. “I don’t know why that is, but Ghanaians want you to come more than once.”

Bawumia continued that the NDC has no choice but to bring a first-timer in 2028 since President Mahama cannot run again, giving the NPP a significant advantage.

“I believe we will have an advantage, all things being equal, over that new candidate coming in 2028. I believe we will have a very big advantage,”

Bawumia’s claim was widely rubbished by social media users, who pointed to the fact that President Mahama himself won his very first election as a candidate. The NPP was also vilified for their performance in office and for concentrating on the next election so soon after their humiliating defeat in the last one.

Bawumia apologises to NPP supporters

The former Vice President and so-called ‘Economic Wizkid’ also apologised to members of his party for failing to perform up to the required standard during his time in office and pledged to do better next time.

Bawumia acknowledged that while they got ‘many things right’ during their time in office, they also got ‘some things wrong’. He said they have learnt from the experience and are now in a better place to transform the lives of Ghanaians and their party members the next time they win office.
