NPP Founding Member, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe Praises Mahama for Work on the Economy and Governance – We No Longer See the Arrogance of the Past

A Founding Member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for his handling of the Ghanaian economy so far.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 Ghana during the launch of his book “A Nation into Retirement: The Narrative of a Statesman”, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said the NDC’s approach to governance is refreshing after the arrogance of the last 8 years.

The former Ghana ambassador to Serbia said President Mahama had mostly fulfilled his promises in regard to the 120 Day social contract between the NDC and Ghanaians.

“What I see so far is quite inspiring because he (President Mahama) has implemented some of those promises which is a good start. So, I’ll rate him a 7 out of 10.” He said.

“You can see that a lot is happening in the economy as well. And also, what I like so far is that the ministers are doing their best. That sort of arrogance that we saw not quite long ago, is not reflecting. So, I think, and he has come through, it appears he has enormous control over his ministers and the country.” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe added.

The President delivered a speech on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 to address the 120 day social contract, a set of promises government promised to fulfil in its first 120 days following the NDC’s massive election 2024 victory.

In the speech, President Mahama said his government had fulfilled all the promises, “from forming a lean government and establishing a road, robust code of conduct to taking decisive action to scrap burdens of taxes, initiating inquiries into past round doings, launching major job creation programs, tackling illegal mining, reviving our environment, promoting our tourism and export sector, streamlining scholarships, supporting vulnerable populations, and holding our security agencies accountable,” he said.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe knocks Bawumia

In contrast to his praise of President Mahama, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe has described the NPP’s 2024 election flagbearer and former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as unfit to lead the NPP into the next elections.

The former football administrator said Bawumia does not have the necessary resolve to lead due to his failure to speak up against policies he disagreed with during the NPP’s time in power.

Dr Bawumia, during the 2024 elections, noted that he was not in charge as Vice President but disagreed with policies such as the e-levy and betting tax and promised to scrap them once elected as President.
