Ghanaian actor, Kwadwo Nkansah Lilwin, called on television stations to cease airing any movie or television shows he has produced without acquiring the right to do so from him.

Lilwin, in a viral video, said any station that flouts his warning would find themselves in court and subject to damages worth tens of thousands of Ghana cedis.

The comic actor said any station that violates his copyright will pay him four times as much as it cost him to produce the movie or series in question.

An angry Lilwin said his actions are motivated by the fact that Ghanaian television stations are able to purchase the copyright to air foreign movies and TV shows, yet when it comes to Ghanaian content, they freely flout copyright.

He said he has also found out that many stations pay cheap fees to licence old movies and stay away from licensing recent movies because the fees are much more expensive.

Nkansah said in light of all this, he is making his movies unavaialable to all stations and any station who airs it without authorization will find themselves in legal hot water.

“This warning is for all tv stations in Ghana…you are able to buy the rights to movies and series from abroad, yet we have many movies and series that you refuse to buy the rights to. We don’t have a problem, however, never make the mistake to show my movie when you’ve not purchased the rights. Never air my movie for free…otherwise, you would pay me back times four,” Lilwin said.

Bimbo Ademoye warning

Kwadwo Nkansah’s warning comes at a time when Nollywood stars such as Bimbo Ademoye and Omoni Oboli have fired similar shots at Ghanaian television stations.

A short while ago, Ademoye broke the internet when she sternly warned all Ghanaian TV stations to refrain from airing her content.

Shortly after her complaints, the Minister for Communication, Sam George, and the Executive Secretary of the National Films Authority, Kafui Danku, plegded government would take action against the menace.
