Black Stars and Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has been gifted a brand new car by a wealthy Ghanaian businessman, weeks after going viral for riding in public transport (trotro).

Asare, who made his Black Stars debut in March during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, received a Hyundai Elantra from Alhaji Seidu Agongo, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghanaian Media company, Class Media Group.

The car is to aid him to and from training and for his personal activities.

Asare was ecstatic after taking possession of his new vehicle, expressing gratitude for receiving this exciting opportunity in his life.

“I thank all the supporters of Hearts of Oak and everyone. It is incredible for a lovely gesture to be extended to someone like me,” Asare said.

He further thanked Ghanaians and Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouatarra for giving him the opportunity to express his talent. Asare expressed optimism that the Black Stars would qualify for the 2026 Mundial in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“I thank the whole nation and the president for this opportunity. I also thank my coach Ouattara and everyone who has helped me. I thank Ghanaians as well. God willing, we will be at the World Cup.”

Asare spotted in trotro

Benjamin Asare became a household name in Ghana in March 2025 after Black Stars coach Otto Addo selected him as the first-choice keeper in World Cup qualifying games against Chad and Madagascar.

Asare kept a clean sheet in both games as Ghana secured two huge wins and made giant strides towards qualifying for the World Cup.

Following his Black Stars stint, Ghanaians were stunned after a video emerged showing Asare, a ‘local player’ turning out for Hearts of Oak, in a trotro.

The video went viral and sparked numerous discussions about the financial conditions of local players. Others took it as an opportunity to ‘troll’, saying riding in a trotro was demeaning.

The furore led to highlighting of Asare’s plight, leading to Agongo making a donation that positively impacts the condition of the athlete.
